Save and publish a widget

Learn how the Blocky editor autosaves your Editor draft, what each save error means, what Save does, and how to back out of changes without a discard button.

The editor keeps two versions of your widget. The Editor draft holds the changes that you make in the editor. The published widget is the version that your Embed links show. The editor saves your changes to the Editor draft as you work, and Save publishes them.

The editor saves your draft as you work

The editor saves each change to the Editor draft about 1.5 seconds after you stop changing things. The editor shows no save status. It shows a message only when a save fails.

When you leave the editor with the back arrow, the editor also sends your last changes. It doesn't wait for that save, and it can't show a message if the save fails. If you close or reload the browser tab, the editor can't send them, so changes from the last few seconds can be lost. Before you leave:

  • Wait a few seconds after your last change.
  • If Couldn't save changes shows, click Retry and wait until the message closes.

The changes that the editor saved stay in the draft. You can resume the draft from the dashboard later.

What each save error means

MessageWhat it meansWhat to do
Couldn't save changesThe last save to the Editor draft failed. "Your edits are kept here."Click Retry to save again.
This draft changed elsewhereThe data source of this draft was changed in another tab or window, so the edits here can't be saved.Click Reload to continue from the saved draft.
This change can't be savedYour last change makes the widget invalid. The message says why.Undo or change the setting. The message closes when the problem is gone.

Publish with Save

Click Save in the header to publish your widget. Save does these things:

  • It saves your last changes to the Editor draft.
  • It publishes the draft. The editor shows "Publishing widget…" and then "Publishing started. Your Embed updates in a moment."
  • It deletes the Editor draft after the widget is published.
  • It returns you to the dashboard.

The Embed of the widget updates shortly after you publish.

Save is unavailable while Blocky applies refreshed Notion data, and after the message "This draft changed elsewhere". If Blocky can't start the publish, for example because it can't save the draft first, the editor stays open and keeps your draft.

After "Publishing started", Blocky returns you to the dashboard and publishes in the background. If that publish fails, Blocky keeps the draft. So if your Embed doesn't update, open the Drafts page of the dashboard, resume the draft, and click Save again.

Back out of changes

The editor has no discard button. To go back on changes, use one of these:

  • Undo and Redo in the header, or Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z to undo. The Editor tour lists every shortcut.
  • The resets, which return a look to its template: Reset look, Reset {name} style, and Reset all styles. The settings page explains each one.
  • A template switch, which replaces the whole layout with a fresh template and keeps your inputs. Switch templates and import codes explains what it keeps.

To drop a draft without publishing it, delete it from the drafts in your dashboard, as Editor session drafts explains.
